Modern, reliable and secure business telephony
Modernise your business phone systems and take calls anywhere with VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol).
What is VoIP?
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a way to transmit telephone calls via the internet. It’s an alternative to the traditional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) which handled voice calls and the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) for many decades.
The ISDN switch off in 2025 means that going forward, the default technology will be VoIP for businesses and households alike. It’s important to be ready to embrace this new business phone system in order to gain all the best benefits of VoIP.
However, there is still plenty of confusion among small businesses about the cost of VoIP, how to organise a comprehensive VoIP setup across the business, and the overall question: “What is VoIP?”
In this guide, we will look at the technology in more detail in order to explain the answers to those questions and more, so that you can make an informed decision about the future of your business phone system.
The ISDN switch off
The ISDN switch off
The end of the analogue PSTN network means that historic ISDN lines will no longer work past 2025. As well as voice telephony, the switch-off affects other analogue connected devices, such as alarms and CCTV cameras.
A move from copper-wire analogue to optical-fibre digital is necessary due to the much larger amounts of data that are transmitted every day over long distances. The PSTN network was never intended to support vast quantities of broadband internet data, even though dedicated ISDN lines were one of the first forms of business broadband connection.
By switching voice calls over to digital too, businesses can have a single high-speed connection for calls and data alike. Remember, this is not optional: the ISDN switch off means that from 2025, analogue voice telephony is no longer supported in the UK.
While some analogue equipment may be converted using adapters that plug into the telephone socket, this is not ideal, as it misses out on all of the advantages of VoIP for business use.
As such, we would urge any businesses that have not yet done so to prepare for a fully digital business phone system as soon as possible.
How VoIP systems work
How VoIP systems work
The basics of how VoIP systems work are quite simple to understand: the analogue voice signal is converted into digital data, transmitted via the internet, and converted back into audio at the other end of the call.
It’s a seamless technology, in the sense that you can call a traditional analogue landline and they will hear your voice as normal. The conversion from digital data to audio does not depend on the other party having any specific technology in place.
Calls often sound clearer and may have less delay over long distances, as the data signal travels much faster, especially over fibre optic connections.
VoIP setup should go beyond having a physical phone on every desk. Sophisticated call routing means the same direct-line telephone number can be used to reach an individual at their desk, their mobile device when out of the office, and their voicemail when unavailable.
This is a hallmark of 3CX systems, which businesses should consider using during the transition to fully integrated VoIP telephony.

Improve your business’s ability to record calls with greater transparency
VoIP offer clear call recording and serves as a valuable tool for various key areas of your business. Call recordings help identify areas of improvement, provide feedback to employees, and enhance customer service. They can also be used as evidence in case of disputes or legal issues that require protection. VoIP call recording promotes compliance with regulatory requirements, ensuring businesses meet industry standards and maintain transparency.

Reduce call costs and spend more time supporting your clients
Venom’s VoIP solution significantly reduces call costs for SMEs in the UK and globally in comparison to traditional landlines. VoIP removes the need for routing calls through several analogue exchanges which ultimately attract higher call fees. Calls are also free, if they’re made internally.

Mobility also increases greatly as VoIP can work on a handset via ethernet or wi-fi or even on a desktop with an app. You can take your VoIP connected phone with you anywhere in the world and use it on any device with access to the internet.
Find out moreHow much does VoIP cost?
The upfront cost of VoIP will depend on how many physical telephones and dedicated phone numbers you need. You can choose between installed, cloud-based and fully managed VoIP telephony solutions, each of which can scale to meet your needs. Long-term operating costs are likely to be lower than your existing analogue installation, if you have one. There are several reasons for this, including the ability to route a VoIP phone number to a mobile phone or headset microphone, instead of needing a desktop telephone for every line.
VoIP is a ‘packet-based’ technology. Each small moment of speech is compressed into a tiny data packet and sent at very high speed via the internet. It’s incredibly efficient, which should mean that your bandwidth costs are relatively low, even in large VoIP call centres. Frequently Asked Questions
From 2025, everyone needs VoIP. The PSTN switch-off means all UK telephony is IP-based going forward. While some older equipment may be adapted at the wall socket, long-term all domestic and business phone lines and hardware will need to transition to VoIP. Small businesses should at least consult experts like Venom IT to decide what needs to be done to prepare.
Not really. It’s a much more seamless and versatile technology than PSTN, with the ability to take calls on multiple desktop and mobile devices via the same dedicated telephone number. You can make calls via Wi-Fi or via 5G, so you’re not restricted to a plug-in Ethernet line. Data can be rerouted via different paths across the internet, so if an intermediate server goes down, you can still place calls.
Old analogue copper-wire telephony was never built to support light-speed broadband internet data. As the UK’s trunk telephony network moves over to digital fibre optic, voice calls are being transitioned too. It’s a move that affects the whole country: in the future, all voice calls will be digital with the signal carried by VoIP.
Like other digital signals, VoIP data can be encrypted, making it much harder for anyone to listen in to your phone calls. A properly configured 3CX setup is a good way to do this, with support for Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates, antivirus software and network firewall protection. We can advise you on this, to give you peace of mind that your VoIP data is safe.
In most cases, you can keep your existing phone number thanks to our porting service. There is a small one-off charge for setting this up, which usually takes 2-3 weeks to complete. A small number of telephony providers do not offer this service, or have not entered into a porting agreement with us. Where this is the case, you will be given a new telephone number.
